ART Vision Statement

At Loyal Heights, K-5 art students engage in interdisciplinary projects to learn the Elements and Principles of Design: Line, Shape, Color, Value, Form, Texture, Space, Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm and Unity. These skill sets are scaffolded by grade level to build upon understanding and complexity.

Art objectives are learned in combination with targeted English language arts, history, math, and social/emotional skills.

Artists explore different genres, movements and mediums.

Students practice positive risk-taking; task-based exploration; and both independent and collaborative learning.

The main focus is for students to gain an independent voice/artistic confidence, as well as, feel like an integral part of our creative community.

Grade Level Progression

In kindergarten and first grade, students engage in both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional practices. Students explore painting, collage, drawing/coloring and clay with the pinch pot technique.

The creative work with these mediums continue up to fifth grade.

In addition, grade levels, first to fifth, have spiraled/scaffolded medium-focuses.

In first grade, students begin fiber and embossing. They also continue to explore clay with the coil method.

In second grade, students focus on more in-depth drawing and are introduced to photography. They also learn the slab method with clay.

In third grade, students sharpen their collage, painting and mixed-medium skills.

In fourth grade, students spiral to develop their photography and embossing skills.

In fifth grade, students focus on more advanced fiber and kiln clay with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
